Microsoft’s New Windows 11 Start Menu Design: Evolution Without Revolution

Windows 11’s New Start Menu: Simplicity Meets Flexibility

Microsoft’s New Windows 11 Start Menu Design: Evolution Without Revolution

The Start menu has been the gateway to Windows since its introduction in Windows 95. Now, Microsoft has revealed several radical redesigns for this iconic interface element, though the company has decided not to ship most of the experimental versions.

The Final Design That Will Ship

Microsoft has finalized a new Start menu for Windows 11 that combines user feedback with modern design principles. The updated menu features:

  • A wider, more spacious layout that combines pinned apps and app lists in one interface
  • Option to finally turn off the controversial “Recommended” section
  • Three different views for the “All Apps” section including Name Grid, Name List, and Categories
  • Enhanced customization options to match different workflows
  • Better app discovery mechanisms
  • Improved integration with Android and iPhone content

According to Microsoft’s design team, this update came after extensive research involving over 300 “passionate fans” through feedback sessions and co-creation calls. The designers tested the menu on devices ranging from 10-inch Surface Go tablets to 49-inch ultrawide monitors to ensure consistent usability.

The Experimental Versions That Won’t Ship

What’s particularly interesting is that Microsoft created several alternate designs that won’t be released:

  1. A Start menu with a prominent “For You” tab featuring Teams, PowerPoint, and Copilot-based reminders
  2. A design incorporating widget-like elements reminiscent of the discontinued Live Tiles
  3. A tall, cluttered version attempting to combine too many functions
  4. A confusing design with unclear organization
  5. A full-screen Start menu optimized for touchscreen tablets

Most of these experimental designs included widgets and a “Create” tool – features that were apparently dropped from the final version at the last minute.

 The Philosophy Behind the Changes

Microsoft’s design team followed four guiding principles:

  • “Apps at a Glance” – providing quick access to the entire app library
  • “Make it Yours” – offering robust customization options
  • “Accelerate the Day” – streamlining routine tasks
  • “Honor the Icon” – respecting the 30 years of user muscle memory

The team emphasized their goal to let users “bend Start to fit the way they work,” suggesting a focus on adaptability and personalization.

 When to Expect the Changes

The updated Start menu will begin rolling out to Windows 11 users in the coming weeks. While not explicitly confirmed, it may be officially announced at the upcoming Microsoft Build 2025 conference scheduled for May 19-22.
