Legacy System Assessment

How We Run the Assessment

Risk, cost, and dependencies, ranked honestly.

Legacy systems inventoried: We catalog the aging servers, databases, and line-of-business apps your business still depends on, so nothing critical stays invisible.

Support status checked: We flag operating systems and databases past end of life that no longer receive security patches, the systems attackers look for first.

Dependencies mapped: We map what depends on each old system before recommending a move, because the reason legacy survives is that something relies on it.

Cost to keep measured: We total the out-of-warranty hardware, specialist support, and hours spent nursing each system along, so the real cost of leaving it alone is visible.

Failure risk assessed: We check whether a failover exists and whether the system is in your recovery plan, so you know how long the business waits if it dies.

Findings ranked replace, isolate, or accept: Every system is sorted so you spend on what matters and leave alone what is genuinely fine.

A Katy-based engineer walks you through it: One engineer assesses the systems and explains the tradeoffs, so you make the call with the full picture.

Get a legacy system assessment that tells you what that old server really costs, without a rip-and-replace pitch.

legacy system assessment  //  Houston SMBs

Find out what that old server is really costing you.

Windows Server 2012, an aging SQL database, a line-of-business app nobody fully understands anymore. It still runs, so it stays, until the day it does not.

CinchOps assesses what your legacy systems cost in risk, downtime, and support, then ranks what to replace, isolate, or leave alone.

// What CinchOps does

A legacy system assessment reviews the aging servers, databases, and line-of-business applications your business still depends on, and measures what they cost in security risk, downtime exposure, and support burden. CinchOps inventories the legacy systems, maps what depends on them, and ranks each one replace, isolate, or leave alone. The goal is a clear-eyed plan, not a rip-and-replace pitch, because some old systems are fine and some are one failure from a very bad week.

// what the assessment covers

Five questions about that old system.

L1Is it supported

  • Operating systems and databases past end of life
  • Software no longer receiving security patches
  • The systems attackers look for first

End of life

L2What depends on it

  • The apps and processes tied to the old box
  • The dependency that blocks an upgrade
  • Mapped before anything moves

Dependencies

L3What does it cost to keep

  • Out-of-warranty hardware and specialist support
  • The hours spent nursing it along
  • The true cost of leaving it alone

The burden

L4What happens if it fails

  • Whether a failover exists
  • Whether it is in the recovery plan
  • How long the business waits if it dies

The risk

L5What is the path forward

  • Replace, isolate, or accept with eyes open
  • A migration plan where one makes sense
  • A containment plan where it does not

The plan

// why CinchOps

We assess legacy systems without selling you a forklift.

CinchOps assesses legacy systems for Houston and Katy SMBs in manufacturing, oil and gas, engineering, and construction, where a critical app often runs on hardware older than the people using it. We have migrated these systems and we know which ones can wait.

01

A plan, not a sales pitch

Some legacy systems are fine where they are. We tell you which ones can stay, which need isolating, and which are a real risk, instead of recommending you replace everything.

02

We map the dependencies first

The reason legacy systems survive is that something depends on them. We map those dependencies before recommending a move, so nothing breaks on the way out.

03

We can run the migration or hand it off

CinchOps can plan and execute the replacement, or give your team a documented path. Either way you know what it takes.

04

A Katy-based engineer runs it

One engineer assesses the systems and explains the tradeoffs, so you make the call with the full picture.

// know the risk before it picks the date

Get a legacy system assessment that tells you what that old server really costs, from a Houston team that has migrated plenty and replaced only what needed it.

FAQs

Have Questions?

What systems should we worry about most?
The highest-risk legacy systems are the ones running on out-of-support operating systems (Windows Server 2008, 2012, older SQL Server versions), custom applications where the original developer is unavailable, line-of-business tools with no current vendor support contract, and any system that has been excluded from patching for over a year because patching might break it.
Do we have to replace everything at once?
No. The assessment ranks legacy systems by risk and effort so the work runs in waves. The highest-risk, lowest-effort systems move first. Mid-risk systems get a bridge solution (rehost or containerize) while a longer-term plan develops. Only the systems that justify a full rebuild get one, and those are on a 12 to 36 month roadmap.
What does 'rehost' actually mean?
Rehost means moving the existing application from old hardware or an out-of-support operating system to a current platform without rewriting the application itself. Common rehost paths are virtualizing onto current Windows Server, containerizing an older Windows application, or moving the workload to a cloud-hosted environment. The application stays the same; the platform underneath becomes supportable again.
How long does an assessment take?
A typical mid-sized SMB legacy assessment runs four to six weeks. The first two weeks are inventory and dependency mapping. The middle two weeks are risk scoring and path analysis for each system. The final week is the roadmap, the budgeting estimate, and the leadership briefing. Execution work is scoped separately by system.
Can CinchOps run the migrations too?
Yes. CinchOps runs rehost migrations, manages cloud lift-and-shift work, coordinates with commercial application vendors during replacement projects, and partners with development firms on rebuild engagements. The legacy assessment is the front end of the work; the execution is part of the broader managed IT engagement.
