Nobody checks whether the brakes work while the light is turning red. You check them in the shop, on a normal Tuesday, when nothing is riding on the answer.
Backups deserve the same treatment.
A backup job that reports “completed” is telling you a file got written somewhere. It is not telling you the data inside is usable, that your team knows the restore steps, or that you would be back to work in hours instead of days.
Those are separate questions, and the only way to answer them is to actually restore something before you have to.
A backup review looks at:
Whether a test restore genuinely succeeds
How long a full recovery would realistically take
What is being backed up, and what quietly is not
Whether a copy lives somewhere ransomware cannot reach
Most businesses we talk to have backups running. Far fewer have proof they work.
โWhen did you last restore a file from backup, not just confirm the job ran?
