Recent Windows RDP Connection Issues: Impact and Solutions

Don’t Let RDP Issues Disconnect Your Business – Fixing Windows RDP Disruptions

Recent Windows RDP Connection Issues: Impact and Solutions

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a critical tool for IT professionals and remote workers alike, providing seamless access to systems across networks. However, Microsoft’s recent Windows updates have introduced significant disruptions to this essential service. This blog post examines the issue, affected systems, and remediation steps to help your organization maintain productivity.

  The Issue: Unexpected RDP Disconnections

Microsoft has acknowledged that customers may experience Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) connection issues after installing Windows updates released since January 2025. The problem has become particularly widespread following the March 2025 Windows security update (KB5053598).

Key Details:

  • Affected connections experience unexpected disconnections after precisely 65 seconds
  • The issue occurs specifically with UDP connections
  • Disconnections happen when connecting from Windows 11 24H2 PCs to RDS hosts running Windows Server 2016 or earlier

While Windows Server 2025 systems are not directly affected as RDS hosts, they may still experience disconnection issues when functioning as RDP clients connecting to older server environments.

  Impacted Systems

The disconnection issue primarily affects:

  • Client systems: Windows 11 24H2 PCs
  • Server systems: RDS hosts running Windows Server 2016 or earlier
  • Connection type: Specifically UDP-based RDP connections

For organizations with mixed environments or those still maintaining legacy Windows Server installations, this issue presents a significant challenge to operational continuity, particularly for remote workers and IT administrators who rely on stable RDP connections.

Remediation Through Known Issue Rollback (KIR)

Microsoft has deployed a solution through Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a Windows feature designed to reverse problematic non-security updates delivered via Windows Update.

For Home and Pro Users:

Most consumer devices will receive the fix automatically after a system restart.

For Enterprise Environments:

IT administrators must take the following steps:

  1. Download and install the Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 KB5053598 250314_20401 Known Issue Rollback
  2. Configure the Group Policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates
  3. Deploy the policy via Local Computer Policy or Domain policy on the domain controller
  4. Restart affected devices to apply the group policy setting

Microsoft provides detailed guidance for deploying and configuring KIR Group Policies on their support website.

Long-term Solution

Microsoft has announced that a permanent fix will be included in a future Windows update, at which point organizations will no longer need the temporary KIR solution.

Best Practices for Managing the Issue

While implementing the KIR solution, organizations should consider these best practices:

  1. Monitor connections to identify affected systems
  2. Prioritize critical workloads for immediate remediation
  3. Document all applied fixes for future reference
  4. Stay informed through Microsoft’s Windows release health dashboard for updates
