The Fix Checklist

Fully patching is the real fix - with fallbacks if you cannot update yet.

The permanent fix is already in current Windows updates, so the fastest path is to update - and there are interim options if you are stuck on an old build.

  • Update to KB5053656 (March 27, 2025) or later. This removed the problem for good; a fully patched Windows 11 24H2 and its servers will not disconnect at 65 seconds.
  • Confirm the build. If a machine still drops, it is behind on updates - check Windows Update and install the latest cumulative update, then restart.
  • Interim option: Known Issue Rollback. If you cannot patch immediately, Microsoft's KIR Group Policy for Windows 11 24H2 temporarily disabled the change - deploy it via Group Policy and restart.
  • Interim option: disable UDP for RDP. Setting fClientDisableUDP = 1 forces RDP onto TCP and stops the drop, at the cost of slightly higher latency.
  • Then remove the workaround. Once systems are on the fixed build, retire any KIR policy or UDP override so you are back to the standard configuration.
